Healthline delivers a needs led programme of informal health education to young people in youth clubs and projects across the City using the “Healthy Youth” curriculum framework. We use enjoyable interactive games and exercises so that young people practice communication skills whilst gathering information which should help them to make informed choices. The 4 topic areas are:
-Emotional Health & Well being
-Healthy Lifestyles (Diet, Exercise and impact of the environment)
-Sexual Health & Relationships
-Substance Awareness – Illegal drugs/Alcohol & Smoking
Good health is your right! Sometimes you need more information or an opportunity to explore your own or other people’s attitudes in order to make changes to how you live. You might also need additional support to make those changes and Healthline can help put you in touch with other services which could offer such support.
If you are aged 11 to 25 you may be able to access our sessions through your youth club or project.
As youth workers we place a great deal of importance on getting to know members of the group, building trust and finding out individual needs.
We therefore are reluctant to deliver “one off” sessions and offer programmes of 6 sessions of 1.5 to 2 hours duration within which time it is possible to explore two of the above topics.
We also offer several more in depth programmes which require a commitment from young people for the full 6 sessions:-
• Go Girls – Exploring and raising young women’s Self-Esteem
• Ready or Not Virtual Baby Programme – Exploring when the time is right to become a parent; emotionally, financially & practically. This programme needs to be linked with a Youth Projects commitment to using the Virtual Baby resource on a residential trip with young people.
• STAR Programme - designed and produced by Liverpool University to explore young people’s aspirations, develop confidence and build on their strengths (or “STAR skills) . This can be linked with our Emotional Health and/or Sexual Health “module”
Ask your youth worker/key worker to get in touch with us
We are based at the Door but most of our sessions are held in youth clubs, community centres, sports centres or anywhere where there is a group of young people who are interested.
We come to work in your youth setting
This is discussed with your youth club.
How they felt during a session & What they gained from the session:
Interested and happy – Zak aged 16 got to talk about my anger
Interested and safe – Sarah 17 learned about “safer sex”
Relaxed and confident – Jennifer 14 know what is meant by a “unit” (of alcohol)
and that I’m drinking too much!
We have a Health Work Request Form which can be sent and returned by email or standard postal system.
Our main source of funding is from the NHS (Liverpool Primary Care Trust). We make application to various other sources to enable us to offer our service free to Liverpool Youth Service or Voluntary Sector youth projects. We do however ask projects to contribute if they are receiving funding for the work we are going to support them in delivering.
