Goodbye Yellow Brick Road…

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road… after 47 years of street based youth work, MYA said goodbye to its last street based project, due to Local Authority cuts. No longer a priority in a city which has seen more than its fair share of deprivation, this decision has saddened us. Anfield Detached Youth Work project was set up as a pilot in 1967 to address the issues of young people who did not, or could not, use Youth Centre provision. The idea was to meet young people where they met, on the streets and in parks, engaging those most vulnerable and at risk of negative outcomes. MYA was at the vanguard of this new youth work method and by 2010 managed 5 street based projects across the region. But hit by central government cuts, these projects have now all closed. We continue to believe in the idea of taking youth work out onto the streets and will continue to look at other funding opportunities to support this work, but until then, I guess its  Au revoir for now…
